The Bathroom flashback

Wet and joyful, playing with my soap toys and pretending that the Mr. Bubbles was a mustache. There was my mom, standing over me, I remember she had an awkward look on her face, Hi mom I said, as I looked up at her, looking for laughter because of how goofy I must have looked.  all she said with eyes so cold: “goodbye” and with one quick flash, I saw the iron drop into the tub and all went black. I awoke to her drying me off, she wasn’t saying anything, she carried me to my room and put me on my bed. All she said was “go to sleep” I remember the pain that was all through out my body, I remember being so scared. Another memory that has left its mark on my brain.

Bob Marley > Quotable Quote

Bob Marley“Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you. When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful. There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever. Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid it’s like being young again. Colours seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life.”

Our Family

my familyAs I sit outside under the early evening sky, the events of the day bounce around in my head. I felt good today, my wife and I did what we do best, taking care of all our boys one by one. We got up early and got the little ones ready for school; my two older boys were out by 630 in the am. We laughed and joked with them, just to ensure they had a good start of the day, well they missed the bus, so Daddy’s taxi was at their service. We had a meeting at the school anyways so why not spend a little more time with them. So off we went and arrived at the school. Our meeting went well; it was to finalize our 10 year olds IEP. It’s hard to hear that your child has a learning disability, but it is comforting to know that he is going to get everything he needs to ensure his future success.

As parents, we strive to make right choices in all of our children’s lives, each and every day, at least till they can make the right choices on their own. We are in no way perfect, but I am for certain we do our very best. My wife and I come from very similar backgrounds, because of this; we have done everything we can to break the vicious cycle we both were accustomed to. The love that my wife and I feel for our children is so intense, so in depth, you can’t explain it. We tell our children we love them, each and every day, as many times as we can. We never want them to feel that they are unloved or unwanted. We do our best to provide for them, sadly, the way this economy is and having a large family like ours; times are tough, more often than not. We still do what we can to give them a life we didn’t have.

As time passes by, our children are getting older and more independent. Soon they will be off to college or whatever they should choose to do. I am hopeful that we have instilled in them the right guidance and grooming, to be good people in this life. Give to others without expecting anything in return. Live life to the fullest you can. Make a mark on this world, change people’s lives for the better. Always love unconditionally, and always be true to who you are. –R.P.H.

I was driving in to work this morning and I started thinking about all the days I dreaded going to work. I was so sick of it… the job, my boss, the people I worked with, the traffic… I would wake up angry every morning. I didn’t want to deal with the crap of the job, but I was forced to go. I had been homeless, I was broke, living paycheck to hopefully the next paycheck. I couldn’t take a day off for fear I would get fired. I was just frustrated. I thought I hated my life and the job.
It was so aggravating because God had placed all these dreams and hopes in my soul and mind and I had no idea how they were going to come to pass. To have a dream of being something better and living better than the way I was at that moment and to not see a way of getting there felt like death to me. I thought, “Dear God, why would you give me so much hope and not make a way?” But what I learned through prayer was, with no path in front of you and no road map… this is where true faith begins. With faith I realized that I wasn’t frustrated with my life or the job, I was frustrated because I was a person who had dreams for myself, a person who had visions for my life and I wasn’t living it. Have you ever been there, where you felt so strongly that there was more to this life than what you see in front of you?
One of the most difficult things about being a dreamer is the fear that the dream will never happen. I’m here as a living witness to tell you your dreams can come true. You can’t give up. And I am here to let you know that everything can work together for your good. The time that you are spending on that job that you think is a dead end is not. You’re being prepared just like I was. I was a shoeshine boy, I worked as a bill collector, a used car salesman, in housekeeping in a hotel, and they all were preparation for where I am now.
What do these things have to do with where I am now? I’m glad you asked. I am able to use skills that I learned. I shined shoes, so I know how to shine my shoes if I need them to look nice. Selling used cars was a great way to learn how to close a deal. Bill collecting taught me great negotiation skills. Working at that 5-star hotel taught me a lot about travel. Every experience in your life is here to teach you something.
Today, while you’re at work, don’t be frustrated. Look around you and ask God what are you there to learn and how will it be a part of your future dream. Honor that job, do the best you can at it, because God will bless you for honoring something that belongs to another.
I hope this inspires you today. If you need a little more inspiration then watch my first sit-down interview in years with Oprah on Oprah’s Next Chapter. It airs this Sunday on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network at 9/8c. I talk a little about not giving up. I know it will move you.
Here’s a prayer for today: “God help me hold on, help me to get to what I dream of, help me to honor where I am today so that I can appreciate where I will be tomorrow. In Jesus’ name.”
